Obituary of Bruce Williams

9 July 1950 - 31 December 2012 Rev. Dr. Bruce Williams, MDiv, MD, CCFP, FRCPC, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He died of complications due to lymphoma. Bruce was born in Duncan, B.C. to David Ricardo Williams, QC, (d 1999) and Laura Williams (d October 15, 2012). Bruce was a loving husband and best friend to Janet whom he married December 29, 1979. He was an faithful father to his 5 children: Dorothy (Jean-Sébastien), Katharine (Justin), Teddy, Timothy and Christopher and grandfather to William and François-Xavier. He was brother to Suzanne, Harry, Owen and Jonathan, and uncle to 19 nieces and nephews. Bruce earned his medical degree from UBC (1973), his specialty in Psychiatry at U of T (1987) and his Masters of Divinity from Trinity College (1992). Following this, he was ordained as a Deacon at St John's York Mills Anglican Church. Bruce and Jan lived in Whitehorse, Yukon (1979-1983) where Bruce worked as a family physician at Whitehorse General Hospital and Medical Clinic. In Toronto, Bruce was a psychiatrist at Youthdale Treatment Centre (1985-2012). During these years he also worked at Whitby Jail, Ministry of Correctional Services and Toronto Probation. While serving as a Deacon, Bruce was a passionate advocate of restorative justice. Bruce enjoyed gardening, playing the double bass (and washtub bass), and cooking robust meals for his family and the many guests whom he welcomed. He will be remembered as an exceptionally generous man. The family would like to thank loyal friends, colleagues and the Parish of St John's York Mills for their prayers and support. Visitation will take place Monday, January 7, 2013 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at St. John's York Mills Church, 19 Don Ridge Drive.
