It happened some years ago, but how well I remember the first time I met Ilmar Heinsoo, the Estonian Honorary Consul General in Toronto.
During those youngish years, the thought of being in the presence of a dignitary made me feel somewhat nervous, even though it was merely a routine meeting in his office to discuss my application for an Estonian passport.
With his outstretched arm, warm handshake and genuine smile, Ilmar Heinsoo dispersed the butterflies from my stomach.
The last time I saw Ilmar Heinsoo, he was in a wheelchair at St. Andrew's Estonian Lutheran Church, after the wedding ceremony of his son, Thomas, to Kristiina.
It was a most beautiful sunny day. We shook hands and I said: "I remember you."
... Life, oh precious life, you are a race against time. ... Soon it will be Friday, September 14th, 2012. St. Andrew's Church will be overflowing with tears and memories of an unforgettable and beloved human being, whose outstretched arm and heart touched the lives of thousands.
... "I'd like to see you one more time and warmly grasp your hand in mine. But now it's time to part our ways and face the sunset of today. Memories, so beautiful, will never fade away. I'd like to reach that Promised Land,
where once again I'll hold your hand. There, we'll never say goodbye. There, we'll never have to cry. There, where flowers, beautiful, will never fade away." ...
With deepest sympathy to Thomas Heinsoo, Estonian Honorary Consul in Toronto, his wife Kristiina, Jakob and Mihkel, as well as other family members ... may the promises of God in Revelation 21: 1-7 console you, and give you strength to endure the sorrows of this passing world. ... Fly quickly, love, to the darkest corners of this crying world. Heal the broken hearts. Fly quickly, love! ... Evy Hannes in Canada
