It seems Miriam had a hard time adjusting to life in Canada. She wasn't here for very long, and sometimes it takes a while to settle into place and make friends. I'll be she never in her wildest dreams could have imagined the outpouring of sympathy over her disappearance, and the pain or her family and friends. I didn't know Miriam. Until recently. After all I'd heard about her, but I think it's fair to say that she now has a piece of my heart... we have come to know her. The slightly lopsided, shy smile we saw in the pictures of her in the newspapers and on TV. The stories we heard of her seemingly well concealed discontent with our fair city. We came to know her parents, devastated and torn by the fear of the unknown. Her father's frustration and anger. Their great loss in terms of so many things. I hope someday a young lady who is suffering from.. depression? fear? fright? Life gets to know Miriam. I hope Mariam's legacy will endure and ensure that kids like her turn to a grown up for help. Rest in peace, dear girl - I hope your demons and finally silenced.

To the Makhniashvili family: My heart breaks for you; this was not the end to Mariam's disappearance the citizens of Toronto hoped for. It is finally, though, an end to the mystery of where she was. No doubt you will still ask why and how for a long while. We all will. At this time, I still pray Mariam's father, Vakhtang, can attend her funeral. You've all suffered so much. May Mariam now at least finally Rest In Peace as she is laid to rest. And may you all, Lela, Vakhtang, Giorgi, begin the process of healing. Mariam - I'm sorry we never got the chance to know you.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Makhniashvili, I extend my deepest sympathy to all of you at this most difficult time. George, as your math teacher two years ago, I clearly remember those early days after Mariam's disappearance. You were so brave. We were all hoping for her safe return. I planned to come today to the visitation but I am not well. I hope comfort and peace will come to all of you and that your fond memories of Mariam will fill your hearts. You will remain in my thoughts.

We've never met, and I did not know your daughter. But as a mother, your story, and Mariam's story, reached deep into my heart. I just wanted to make sure you knew how many of us in Toronto were hoping and praying for Mariam's safe return. I am so very saddened that it was not to be so, but I wanted you to know that she will remain in the collective hearts and thoughts of Toronto. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
