I first met Thora in the late 1970's when the new Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame was being estblished. We were looking for historic photos and also had some that needed a home. The WCPI was a perfect fit for us and Thora Cooke was the best project director we could have ever had to help us launch this ambitious project. From this intial encounter she went on to become a good friend of mine and as we shared an interest in Western Canadian History many an hour was spent looking through not only sport photos but countless lifestyle images that told the story of early days in Winnipeg, of Manitoba and the West! She would always call me and say "Why don't you drop in for coffee, I have something you might be interested in!". She was an important citizen of our province who made a most significant contribution in her lifetime. Future generations may not directly appreciate the contribution but the images they look at will have arrived for their viewing with her kind and careful 'finger prints' all over them. Brenda and I send the family our condolences and we will often pause to remember this great woman who did great things for her beloved province.

I read the wonderful tribute to Thora by Margo Goodhand, Editor of The Winnipeg Free Press and was warmed with memories of this lovely lady --- a powerhouse and a passionate builder of the Pictoral Index. I was privileged to be a member of her advisory board in early years and learned first hand what a truly amazing woman she was. No matter how big the challenge, how difficult the problem, Thora seemed to draw strength and energy from it and faced each with grace and seeming endless good humour. She has truly left a lasting legacy.

The staff at the University of Winnipeg Archives would like to offer condolences to Thora's family. We have housed the Western Canada Pictorial Index since 2004, and it was also located here back in the 70's and 80's when Thora first worked tirelessly on its development. Her contributions to Manitoba's visual heritage will not be forgotten. From the staff of the University of Winnipeg Archives
