Obituary of Sophia De Jonge
De Jonge, Sophia Louisa
October 4, 1958 - May 3 2008
Sophia passed away peacefully at her Toronto home, surrounded by family. Beloved wife of Jeffrey Wilson, loving mother of Catherine, Elizabeth, Alexander and Emma. She was predeceased by her father, Marinus De Jonge and her sister Yolanda. She leaves behind her mother, Corrie De Jonge and brothers Mike (Lucy), Fred (Lisa) and Pieter (Susan). Sophia obtained her LLB from The University of Windsor in 1984 and her Masters in Law from The Free University in Brussels, Belgium in 1986. After practicing law on Bay Street, in 1988 Sophia joined Kodak Canada as In-House Legal Counsel where she was respected for her hard work, intellect, compassion, and dedication. She enjoyed tennis, squash, and skiing at the Georgian Peaks Ski Club where she had many friends and supported the Peaks racing program. Sophia spent many wonderful summers at the De Jonge family cottage on Lake of Bays. She was a member of the Rosedale Presbyterian Church and was very involved with her children's school activities, recently co-chairing the Whitney Public School main fundraising gala. In 1997, Sophia was diagnosed with breast cancer and in 2001 retired from work to spend more time with her family. She pursued her love of travel, including family trips to Italy, France, the Galapagos Islands, The Bahamas, California and, this past March, to Hawaii. Sophia's family thanks Dr. David Warr and the staff at Princess Margaret Hospital and all of her caregivers for their dedication. Also thanks to her many friends who stood by Sophia through it all.
The Pink Tulip Fund
Determined that something good should come from her struggle with breast cancer, in 2007 Sophia and some great friends founded "The Pink Tulip Fund". The goal of The Pink Tulip Fund is to help young girls to increase their awareness and knowledge of breast cancer prevention. By establishing good habits today and empowering young women to make smart choices, we can help to ensure that they lead long, healthy lives, and that fewer will experience the pain of breast cancer. The Fund's website is www.pinktulip.ca.
