Obituary of Barbara Steele

Barbara Livingstone Steele (nee Pollock) Died in Toronto on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the age of 81. Barbara is predeceased by The Hon. Donald Steele, her beloved husband of 56 years, and her parents Carl and Helen Pollock. She is survived by her brother John (Joyce) of Cambridge, her daughter Victoria (Tom) of Ottawa, her sons Mark (Eva) of Toronto and Douglas (Elizabeth) of Aurora and her five grandchildren David, Michael, Stephen, Claire and Elise. Barbara was actively involved with many volunteer, public and corporate organizations. She was Past-President of the Junior League of Toronto, Past President of Bloorview Children's Hospital and Past Chairman of the Bloorview Children's Hospital Foundation. She was a former director of Electrohome Limited, Spar Aerospace and Shepherd Products. She also served as a director of the Ontario Heritage Foundation and the Canadian Club of Toronto, and was an active volunteer leader with both the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Garden Club of Toronto. Born in Kitchener, Barbara went to school there as well as at Havergal College, the University of Toronto and Waterloo Lutheran University. Apart from her family, she enjoyed world travel, reading, summers on Lake Rosseau in Muskoka and winters at Osler Bluff in Collingwood. Barbara's memorial service will be held in CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK, 1570 Yonge Street, Toronto (north of St. Clair) on Wednesday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the exceptional staff of Integracare, Christie Gardens and Dr. Sandra Black of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for their outstanding professional care over the past 10 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Barbara L. Steele Childhood Disability Fund at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation.
