I was so sorry to hear about Robert. I got to know him during my days as host of CBC's 'Market Place', especially during contract time. He was always so cheerful, positive and of course, the best dressed of anyone around there! My sincerest condolences to his family, Michael and all those who loved him. We have lost a special person.

It was with a great deal of sadness that I learned of the death of Robert Abraham, my immediate boss during my years at CBC's flagship television program The Journal. The thoughts that come to mind are of his gentle manner, his smile, his unfailing courtesy in even the most stressful of situations. I learned a great deal by observing how he diffused many potentially volatile encounters with tact and kindness. A true gentleman in every sense of the word.

Robert was a kind, thoughtful manager when we worked together at the CBC. More than 20 years afterward he helped me untangle an old paper trail... something that made a big difference in my work life. He remembered the details and was generous with his knowledge and advice. One of the good guys... the kind you think of from time to time, no matter how long ago it was.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend and comrade-in-arm from our adventurous and turbulent days at CBC's The Journal. We were together in the first days of the founding of that nightly news and current affairs program in 1982, together with our host Barbara Frum, and our joint friend Anne Emin. Robert and Anne were the business managers of The Journal, not only running a multi-million dollar national and global operation, but caring for over a hundred journalists, documentary field crews, editors, graphic artists and finance people. It was the the flagship of the CBC fleet. We shared exciting and dramatic years, from the war in Lebanon, the Falklands War, to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tienanmen Square, the first Gulf War, and the turbulence of national constitutional crises. Those of his family who knew Robert as a kind and quiet man probably don't know the major role he played in the management and deployment of resources and journalists to the four corners of the world. Among his many roles, he was sent by us to run the Beirut Bureau in the middle of the worst years of the Lebanese civil war. His nickname was "the combat accountant" --keeping order and providing resources on the front lines. That was probably the highlight of his time with us, on the front lines of the country of his origins. He loved the romance and the excitement of the unfolding world news. He always took pains to look after the best interests of our people--their health, their happiness and their safety. He was everything a CBC manager should be. And in return, he was beloved by everyone on the staff (which is rare in the case of financial managers). He cared for people and was loyal to them. In return, everyone was loyal to him. Barbara Frum adored him. He cared for her well being all the time, but particularly in the final months of her illness. He was a friend and a confidant to me and comforted me on many occasions when I was in doubt or in crisis. Though he was, on the surface, quiet and self-effacing, everyone should know that for the ten years of The Journal he lived a larger than life adventure in the most critical decade in the post war world. He loved adventure. And he lived a high octane adventure. In the process, he distinguished himself with courage, daring, compassion and energy. In doing so, he earned the respect and devotion of the over two hundred people who worked with him in those years, and who will cherish the memory of an honoured comrade. I pay my respects to his family and to his cherished friend Michael Rizzo. I won't be able to be there because I am in France and am unable to come back in time. But with a tear, and with pride, I salute my dear friend Robert. Mark Starowicz, CBC Documentary Department

Very sorry to hear about the death of dear Robert. I treasure many fond memories that were shared at St. Georges Orthodox Church during the 1970s when I was soprano soloist with Robert's choir. He will be greatly missed as a musician as well as a friend.

Dear Marion and June, I know Robert was a loving and caring brother and uncle who did not just love but adored you and your children and grandchildren as if they were his own. He was very proud of them and their achievements and frequently spoke of them whenever we would get together. You enriched his life as I'm sure he enriched yours....His sense of humour and wit was priceless. His knowledge on any current event or topic was profound. His sense of style was impeccable. A wonderful musician and superb entertainer he was also a good friend. George and I and our children will miss him terribly but he will always remain in our heart. With deepest condolences to you and your families, Anita Duic & George Sillanpaa (and Alexander and Laura)
