Obituary of Roger Slute
ROGER ALAN SLUTE
Roger Alan Slute passed away in the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Friday, March 28, 2014, in his 90th year. He was born in Toronto, son of Ross Slute and Ethel (Hawkes), and grew up in the Beach area of Toronto. He was the cherished husband and soul mate of Irene Krahn for 32 years. Roger was a loving father to Douglas Fenton (Cinda), Lorraine, Steven, Michael (Margy De Neef), and Harvey. Roger will also be missed by daughters-in-law Sharon Slute and Marilyn Vaccaro, brother and sister-in-law John and Rita Reimer, nephew Kevin (Elizabeth), niece Kristin (Louis) and grand-niece Megan. Remembered by grandchildren David, Kate, Anathea (Ian), Jeremy, Kira (Ante), Scott, Eric, Leah and Tyler, and great-grandchildren Savannah, Lauren, Julia and Ava. Following high school, Roger enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada and England during World War II. Returning to Toronto, he graduated from the University of Toronto and had a distinguished career in Hospital Administration, working at the Peterborough Civic Hospital and the Royal Edward Chest Hospital in Montreal before joining the Ontario Hospital Association in 1960. He spent the next 28 years until retirement at the Association developing and overseeing many hospital programs and initiatives, and serving the hospitals of Ontario. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed all sports, a stamp and coin collector, and family history researcher. He and Irene enjoyed travel, both in Canada and abroad. As his health declined in the last few years, many dedicated nurses, physicians and care givers joined Irene in caring for Roger to enable him to remain in their home until a week before his death, enjoying the urban wildlife and lake view from atop the Scarborough Bluffs. Special thanks to caregivers Pricilla, Donna and Jackie. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Mennonite Central Committee, the Toronto Wildlife Centre or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. A celebration of Roger's life will be held at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Friday, April 4, 2014, with a visitation at 12:00 p.m. and a service at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
