I met Howard in 1957 , he was one of my first employers , when he was in partnership with Len Hurst. Howard was easy going and a gentleman in all his dealings and would regularly take the staff out for Lunch ! When Howard discovered my interest in sailing he invited me to his cottage( Pen Dragon ) and taught me to sail in a small boat and in strong winds , which scared me half to death ! Through the years I worked on several projects with him and also enjoyed his hospitality at the property on Lake Simcoe. Here I met and enjoyed the company of his extended Family . We kept in touch over the years for monthly Lunches even after my employment with him . After I moved away from Toronto he and I visited each other several times a year . He came a couple times in the little sports car to Niagara Falls to visit. I have many fond Memories of having known Howard Chapman !!!!! Keith Hoorn

I met Howard in 2006 when he helped me with some details of my book on Toronto's architectural sculpture (Faces on Places: A Grotesque Tour of Toronto). His father had designed several of the buildings in my book and Howard had restored one of them. I'm sorry we didn't keep in touch beyond that - he was very kind, helpful and supportive - and came out to my book launch. My condolences to his family and friends.

Howard was such a very special person. I hold many a fond memory of all the family up at the Lake Simcoe cottage. (That broken down VOLVO i will always remember as well) Our childhood was carefree and simple. Howard and Valerie were two of the best parents i'd ever known. I will forever remember them, but especially...their son, John..as he was my first love.
My condolences to all the family. (I apologize for not being able to attend on Saturday, as I have a booked ticket to the west coast to celebrate my eldest son's birthday.)
With much warmth, Mary

We never knew Howard personally, but felt we knew much about him and the family, through knowing his younger twin brothers Francis and Christopher. Apart from being remarkably long-lived (and Howard maintained that family characteristic as an example for his young (86) brothers to follow), the family all had a common thread of artistic excellence, exemplified in Howard's architectural accomplishments following in the footsteps of his father, and very evident in the filmmaking achievements of Christopher and Francis. From knowing the "young twins", and particularly Christopher, we know there is also a common thread of gentleness and gentlemanliness, which makes them beloved by all who know them. We are sure that Howard's life also displayed these fine traits, so we feel we knew him at second-hand. Our condolences to the family.
