Obituary of Sarah Collenette

COLLENETTE, Sarah Margaret October 24th, 1920 - March 2nd, 2014. Passed away peacefully in Toronto after a short illness. Beloved wife of the late David Henry Collenette, mother of David Michael Collenette (Penny), grandmother of Christopher (Rachel) and great-grandmother of Charley and Cate. Survived by her sister, Molly, her brothers Harry and Jim and many nieces and nephews. Born in London, England, the eldest of seven children to true Cockneys, Edward and Sarah Whiteaker, Peggy was confronted in her youth by the onslaught of the Great Depression and the Second World War. She was married to her beloved Dave, who served in the British Army, during an air raid in September 1940. As bombs took the lives of close family and friends and leaving devastation around her, like thousands of others in London she endured many sleepless nights in the London Underground during the Blitz but persevered in working to overcome the Nazi challenge. In 1957 the Collenettes sought a better life in Canada and emigrated to Toronto, settling in East York where Peggy and Dave lived the rest of their lives. Like millions of others, the Collenettes made a happy and prosperous new life in their adopted land and were proud Canadians. After training as a Registered Nursing Assistant she worked for twenty-six years at the Toronto East General Hospital, where she received care on a number of occasions, including her last valiant battle for life. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Toronto East General Hospital and Bridgepoint Health Centre for their dedicated professionalism and sincere care during Peggy's final weeks. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7th. A private family service to follow at a later date. Interment will take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
