Obituary of Sylvia Furlong
FURLONG, Sylvia Annette
Michael B. Furlong sadly announces the quiet passing of his beloved wife Sylvia Annette (nee Dubas) on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Toronto General Hospital. Sylvia was born August 25, 1942 in Fort William, daughter to William and Pauline Dubas. Sylvia was one of the first babies in Canada to successfully have life saving surgery for a congenital heart condition. However, she had to cope with other surgeries throughout her life to address other cardiac defects. Once her health was strong enough to allow her to go to school and give up home schooling, she embraced a full social life at Fort William Collegiate High School, Broadway Church and her Westfort neighbourhood. Sylvia enjoyed a long career with the Bank of Montreal, beginning at the Victoria Avenue Branch in Fort William and ending at the corporate offices in Toronto on Bloor Street. It was Michael Bernard Furlong, her one true love, who whisked her away to live in Toronto. They married August 26, 1967. They travelled the world and loved their vacations in Hawaii and Palm Springs. The Furlongs tried all manner of lifestyles - the burbs, town houses, apartments, Cabbagetown - you name it. They discovered that the best home for them was the condo in downtown Toronto; close to work and all the best of Toronto's restaurants, culture and entertainment. This bright and intelligent lady was an active Director on condo boards. She had an eye and ear for details. She even developed case law for some issues! Sylvia was predeceased by her parents William and Pauline Dubas. Sisters Jean Pawliuk (Michael) and Madeline Papa (Nicholas), and nephew Eugene Pawliuk. She will be profoundly missed by her husband Michael and her two little sisters (nieces), Polly Papa (Lonnie Glass) and Patricia Neely (Ian). Other surviving nieces and nephews are William Pawliuk (Bernice), Terry Pawliuk (Melinda), Michael Pawliuk (Sheri), Victoria Papa (Joe), Matthew Papa. Great-nieces and nephews Zoe Glass, Nickolai Papa, Alexandra Papa, Kathleen Brown (Mike), Dr. Jonathon Pawliuk (Rachelle). Great-great-nieces Isabella and Abigail Pawliuk. Donations can be made in Sylvia's memory to Toronto General Hospital, R. Fraser Elliott Building, 190 Elizabeth Street, 5th Floor, Toronto M5G 2C4.
