“Aunt Taff” never took herself too seriously, and I could always count on her for a laugh. I loved the way that, as she got older, she would respond to “How are you?’ with a brief report on her health to “get that out of the way” so that she could get on the with serious business of joking and telling stories. She knew how to have fun, and I remember many laughs when she joined Mom and I for lunch during her brief stay at Sunrise. How rich are the memories of our parents’ friendship, going back to their early years! I remain grateful for the times our families spent together.

When I was in Stouffville on Saturday for my Aunt's memorial service, I was told that Jeanne Manchee had just died also and they gave me a copy of the Tribune with her death notice. I remember her as a kind and generous person and all of you as an important part of my childhood. My condolences to you all. Stephen Clarke

Michael, Philip, Stephen, Jane, and Susan: The beautiful funeral service for your mom was a fitting reflection of the person I knew and loved - the person who found such joy in life and shared that with others. "Aunt Taff" had a special gift for making everyone feel good and everyone feel special. With gratitude for the many happy memories of visits to Spinneybeck, "Ginera" Trimble

Dear Jane, Susie, Steve, Phil and Mike: Sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. I was surprised as she was in such good shape when I saw her last fall. I am very grateful to have known her. We had some really good laughs. No matter how hard I tried, there was nothing that I could say that would shock her. You guys are a testament as to what a great lady and mother she was. Her life was nothing less than envious yet she was never jaded. I am not sure I have ever known a more cheery soul. Au Revoir to the grand dame of the Manchee clan! (Or is that 'peut etre"?). Much love and affection to you all, Adam

This past Sunday, on January 12th, I was perusing February's Architectual Digest and came across several references to Spinneybeck Leather, used in the upholstery of new furniture used in one of the articles. I had not thought about Spinneybeck for sometime! and mused with my husband , Paul Hood (who was Uncle Chuck's dentist for many years) about how Aunt Taff was doing-I had not seen her since Bill Trimble's funeral, when your mom shared some memories, of good times held by the Trimbles, Manchees and Macivors ( I still have fond memories of the summer w/e's when Aunt Taff, Uncle Chuck and the Trimbles came up to our cottage at Leith It felt quite eerie to see Aunt Taff's obituary on the 'Monday morning in the Globe, having just discussed her and Spinneybeck, the day prior, when, in fact Aunt Taff had already died on the Friday--strange, these coincidences!! I laughed out loud at the re line, which was so Aunt Taff, "she didn't pass away/pass on or pass out, she just died! " which has always been how I feel about the euphemisms that we tend to use instead of death--and was sooo Aunt Taff Aunt Taff's obituary really captured her essence -unfortunately, her death marks the end of an era!! Our condolences to you all--I know that she will be missed Regards, Nancy Macivor and Paul Hood

Our deepest condolences to all your family. Taffy was a sparkling gem, one who never failed to be welcoming, gracious, and funny. She told a good story and was also a great listener. And she knew when to wink. We'll miss her but will never forget her.

I too did not know your mom, but the lovely description of her life well-lived caught my eye Monday when reading the Globe and Mail. My mother attended Havergal likely about the same time as your mother, and my aunt also signed up early with the WD's to be sent to England. I helped my aunt attend several Women's Division reunions when she became frail, and I can attest to your noting how impactful that time must have been for these young women. I too served in the Canadian Forces from 1972-1993. If I can add my own tribute, it comes from some historical fact finding I completed when assigned to a 1980s Charter of Rights and Freedoms court challenge. After Canada declared war on Germany September 10, 1939, there was no real plan to use women in the war effort. The Royal Canadian Air Force became the first to advertise it would allow women to serve. To their surprise, recruiting centres were immediately overwhelmed with too many applicants for the few positions identified. It was only because of this keen response that the Canadian military decided it had better create more positions for women. From the description of your mother's lifelong contributions, I can only imagine her recruiting interview; and spunk and conscientiousness she showed while in service. To your mom, aye Rosemary Park LCdr (ret'd)

Good stories and fond memories of Spinneybeck when we as kids stayed at Spinneybeck on weekends -hope we didn't break any toys! Be nice to visit again this spring please keep me posted with the date. My Aunt Charlotte (Keens) Graham expects to be at the service coming up. Sending you hugs, loosing a mum strikes deep and to let you all know -it was an honour to be a "Goddaughter" of Aunt Tate. So sorry to hear of Jeanne's passing. I am one of her Hope Town friends who knew as Jeanne. My husband and enjoyed the hospitality of Spinneydoon many times in the 80's while we floated in the harbour in Erin Gael.....tea in china cups on the front porch, spontaneous invitations for meals and the ultimate luxury for someone on a sailboat with no shower, use of the one outside after swimming....!!!! You did a wonderful tribute to her in the obituary and i would love to be there on Thursday but not travelling as much now in winter. Your Mother always lived life to the fullest ,you will miss her and you have my sympathy..Theo aka Dr Ann T. MarshallSo sorry to hear of Jeanne's passing.
