Obituary of Philippe Garigue
GARIGUE, Philippe - 1917-2008Peacefully on Tuesday March 25th, 2008 in Toronto, Philippe Garigue, in his 91st year. Born to Gisele and Joseph Burke in Manchester (England), beloved husband of Amalia, loving father of Viviane, Robert and Pierre and devoted grandfather to Martine, Fédérico, Alexandra and Francesca. Philippe was educated in Paris, going on to attain a B.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of London. Served in the 2nd World War in the British Army as a Captain of the Royal Fusiliers Special Air Service across Europe and Africa, he acted as a liaison between the Allied troops and the Italian Government. Moving to Canada in 1954 at the invitation of McGill University, he held the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science for the next 15 years at the University of Montréal. During this time he served as President and member of numerous international and national organisations. 1980-87 Principal Emeritus of Glendon College, he founded the international affairs program and contributed widely to the study of Québec culture. Publishing numerous academic and literary works, he received the Prix du Concours littéraires du Québec and the Prix du Consulat généal de France. Philippe was an Officer of the Order of Canada, Officer of the Legion of Honour of France, awarded Knight Grand Cross and Officer, Hosp. and Mil. Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, Grand Croix Orden de Cicernos, Canada 125 Medal, Queens Golden Jubilee Medal, plus 5 other military medals and 2 hon. citizenships. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday March 30th. Funeral Service will be held at FRANCISCAN CHURCH OF ST.
