Remembering Jim as a good man, we shared lots of family history and some good visiting times in Nanton. The big white tents he had set up for a big family celebration was really nice, I had my motor home with me that time. I have spoken of him a few times this past year, wish he was still here on Earth so I could pay him a visit once again. Hope you're enjoying being with the Angels in Heaven Jim, including my husband Howard Fallow. Merry Christmas to all the family and loved ones of Jim. Dianne

My sister and I just saw the sad news that this wonderful man had passed away. We spent memorable times of laughter, poetry and music, with mutual friends together on vacation in Murray Bay many years ago! He was so full of life and talented and gifted. Although we did not know him for a long time, he had a lasting joy that remains with us forever. We express to his family our sincere condolances and prayers, Mary and Joan Calia

Dear Jean and family, I only learned the news about Jim today, via Gus Yaki. I am deeply saddened and wanted to pass on my condolences to you all. I met Jim several times, when we were privileged to make several visits to him at his beautiful homestead near Nanton, with Gus's botany group. When I think of Jim, I think of Poppies - how I loved seeing his amazing Poppy gardens and photographing so many beautiful flowers. His work with native grasses and his desire and passion to transform some of his land back to native prairie grassland impressed us all. Jim and all his many contributions in so many ways, will not be forgotten. My thoughts are with you all. Kind regards, Anne Elliott

I met Jim during the 1970's when a group of us were developing The Niagara Institute into a tripartite forum for top management learning and exchange as well as consultation about public issues. Jim became our "point man" in the PMO and later a participant, director and general source of logic, inspiration and fun. My wife and I were fortunate enough to retain our relationship later as he pursued to his various passions and causes. He was and will remain "a Keeper"!

Our world is so much sadder and a much, much poorer place without Jim. He was such an inspiration and touched so many lives in the most incredible way. His dedication to the students of Pearson College was profound and it was an honour to have been able to work with him in that special time. He always inspired you to try just a little bit harder and give a little bit more because he believed so passionately in those amazing youngsters. Tillie Shuster

I was particularly struck with James kindness and fairness. I am so sorry for your loss.Michele Casey(Kingston, Ontario)

Sir
My world is already a smaller place without your larger-than-life presence.
If you were here, you would see the overwhelming outpouring of notes and emails from countless friends and acquaintances, whose lives you touched during your journey here on earth, and who through their beautiful thoughts, memories and sentiments are keeping your memory alive.
I'd like to add my personal thanks for the 16-1/2 years during which I had the privilege of working with you. You know I have the greatest of respect, admiration and loyalty for you … and words can hardly express my gratitude for everything you have done for me.
As I write this, I recall a quote you recently shared with me which goes something like this: "What is life but a whisper between two secrets - between the coming and the going - between the arrival and the departure - between the beginning and the end".
Rest in beautiful peace dear Sir.

To the family of James Coutts I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jim. I met him when he was running for Pres. of the Young Liberals. The convention was held Sept 1961 in Banff. Mr. Pearson was in attendance. We worked on the Hill at the same time during the Pearson era. Jim was a great person, a devout Liberal and had a wonderful wit. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him With deepest sympathy

To the family and friends of James Allan Coutts: I am truly sorry for your loss. Our loving creator has provided hope and comfort to help us through such difficult times. Isiah 33:24 promises a time when "no resident will say "I am sick".....John 5: 28,29 promises a resurrection.... Rev. 21:4 promises a time when there will be no pain, outcry or even death anymore......The time will soon come when these scriptures will be fulfilled. In the meantime hold on to the memories of your loved one and prepare yourselves that you may be there to greet him when the time comes.

Jim was such a good friend to Canadian authors and his affection for books and for reading was large, encompassing, indeed exemplary. He loved his country so much--was not shy about praising its when it did the right things and loved it so much he was also not shy about criticizing when it did not behave well. In contrast to so manyy other politicians, he acted with integrity at all times and not just when someone was watching or it seemed the astute thing to do. Canada has lost a wonderful patriot.
