Obituary of Peter Simpson

SIMPSON, Peter Lewis Peter Lewis Simpson of Toronto, Ontario passed away peacefully at the Toronto East General Hospital on Friday, September 19, 2008 in his 84th year, of complications resulting from a respiratory illness. Born in Guelph, Ontario on March 19, 1925, Peter was predeceased by his loving wife of 19 years, Maxine Elizabeth Simpson (Betty) who passed away in March of 2007 and his two older brothers John Alexander and Howard Alvar. Peter is survived by his two sisters-in-law Margaret (Peggy) and Marian Elizabeth (Bettie). In addition, he leaves behind seven nieces and nephews and their extended families living in South-Central Ontario. Peter will also be sadly missed by many members of Betty's family, especially Peter and Helen Vernon with whom he was particularly close and who provided tremendous support to Peter over the past few years. Peter joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944 following graduation from Upper Canada College and served with the RCN on the East Coast in Newfoundland until the end of the war. His business career that followed was in accounting and financial management roles where he worked for the likes of A.H. Simpson Industries (his family's business), Superior Propane and Gulf Canada, from whom he took early retirement in 1983. Peter was a very sociable, thoughtful, generous and caring gentleman throughout his life. He will be sadly missed by all that have come to know him through his associations with UCC, The Toronto Hunt Club, The Granite Club, Wynford Heights Bridge Club and Inflation Proof, his private investment club where he dedicated himself to the Treasurer's role over many decades. A memorial service will be held at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East) at 11 a.m. on Monday September 29th with visitation during the hour preceding the service. Memorial donations may be made in Peter's name, by those who wish to do so, to the Ontario Lung Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or to a charity of choice.
