Obituary of Marian Diana Cobban

MARIAN DIANA COBBAN

NOVEMBER 10, 1926 – NOVEMBER 28, 2017

The family is sad to announce the passing of Marian, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 after a short illness.  Marian was the daughter of Arthur Doyle Cobban and Kathryn Manchee Cobban and sister of William Arthur Cobban (dec.) (Joan), Joyce Cobban Santamaura (Tony, dec.), and James Leonard Cobban (dec.).  Devoted aunt of Tohmm (Gerry), John (Guylaine), David (Beth), Paul (Kate), Anne (Ed) and Vincent (Julie), Paul (Sandra), Franca (Ermanno) and Carol.  She also leaves behind seven grandnephews, four grandnieces, two great-grandnephews and one great-grandniece.

She attended Bedford Park Public School, Hatfield Hall School in Cobourg, (where she carried out a few pranks) and Trinity College, University of Toronto.  After graduation, she worked for a time as a librarian at Osgoode Hall and as a conveyancer.

She loved photography especially in the days of film cameras and slides (and won a few photo contests); travelled the world; volunteered on the Canadian Opera Women’s Committee and as a teacher of English as a Secondary Language (E.S.L.).  Her University Women’s Club theology group was important to her and she always enjoyed an informal game of bridge.  Her nephews and nieces reveled in the many outings with her and everyone looked forward to her delicious Spanish Cream, relished at holiday dinners.

One of her proudest accomplishments, along with 2 friends was the design, manufacture and dedication of a stained-glass window of Saint Peter, a gift to Saint Peter’s Anglican Church in Cobourg, Ontario.

Later in life, her passion was genealogy.  She was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage, spending countless tedious but happy hours checking baptismal records and other documents in Scotland and elsewhere.  Always meticulous, every statement had to be validated.  She spent her last years at the Dunfield Retirement Residence and Meighen Manor.

A service will be held in CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK, 1570 Yonge St., on Saturday, December 9th at 2:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toronto General Hospital or Christ Church Deer Park.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
